Book Review - Pretty Little Liars Series

This may be an extremely popular TV show but did you know it all started with a book? I didn't when I first started watching PLL but once I did, I bought the first four books immediately.

Pretty Little Liars Series
by Sara Shepard

In ultra-trendy Rosewood, Pennsylvania, four beautiful girls are hiding ugly secrets. High school juniors Spencer, Hanna, Aria and Emily have grown apart since their best friend Alison DiLaurentis went missing three years ago. But now someone is sending them anonymous notes, threatening to reveal their darkest secrets. There's only one person who knows that much about them, but Ali's gone... isn't she?

EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE- ESPECIALLY HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS SPENCER, ARIA, EMILY, AND HANNA.
Spencer covets her sister's boyfriend. Aria's fantasizing about her English teacher. Emily's crushing on the new girl at school. Hanna uses some ugly tricks to stay beautiful. But they've all kept an even bigger secret since their friend Alison vanished.
How do I know? Because I know everything about the bad girls they were, the naughty girls they are, and all the dirty secrets they've kept. And guess what? I'm telling. -A

Pretty Little Liars: Pretty Little Secrets (Takes place between Unbelievable and Wicked)

Overall this series is amazing, and the best part is that it's nothing like the tv show. So you don't have to worry about any spoilers, unless you read A theories. Honestly, I prefer the books to the show. I find the plot to be much more interesting and not quite as ridiculous. As much as I love the PLL show, they are stretching the story way too much. The books keep it much simpler but still crazy and twisted.

The first 4-6 books are so good! The plot keeps you interested and you can't put them down! As soon as you finish one, you immediately pick up the next. The middle section of the series can move quite slowly and kind of drag on. It felt like the same things were happening over and over again. But once you started the last 6 books, the story started to really pick up. I was reading them none stop until the very end. The beginning and ending of the book series does not disappoint!

The characters in the story and pretty different from the tv show. They have the same core characteristics like, Spencer is super smart, Hanna is pretty and popular, Aria is the kooky artistic one, and Emily's the sporty one. But I felt they were a lot... dumber in the books. THEY KEPT MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. It would get to the point sometimes, where I could call exactly what was going to happen because it would be the same thing they did in the last book. I just wish they could've grown throughout the series. The only character that really made some progress was Emily and she was on an emotional roller coaster the entire time.

The first bonus book, Pretty Little Secrets. isn't one of my favorites. I didn't really get the story line and it never really tied back into the original books, even though it takes place between book 4 and 5. You could honestly skip it and not miss anything. The other bonus book, Ali's Pretty Little Lies, is a completely different story. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS. It gives a ton of background on Alison but I wouldn't recommend reading it until after at least book 8, if not book 12. This is my all time favorite book from the series because it gives you so much information it just blows your mind.

This books are fabulous and I definitely recommend you check them out. I know there's a ton of them but I promise you'll be flying through each book. It's written extremely well and you're on the edge of your seat the entire time. A round of applause to Sara Shepard because these are a masterpiece.
